The more discerning visitor can look forward to private events hosted by the illustrious Sotheby's and Glerums & Bonhams for exclusive items, like works of art and jewellery. Antique rugs and carpets also go under the hammer regularly.

    Collectors and connoisseurs of fine art, antiques and jewellery will find that Singapore has an extensive range of art galleries and antique houses to suit discerning tastes. Two of the world's most reputable auctions houses - Sotheby's and Glerum & Bonhams - feature a wide range of items, from jewellery, jade and porcelain to increasingly popular Southeast Asian paintings to books and maps. International auctions and fairs are not all New Asia - Singapore has to offer. Local carpet houses hold auctions at which quality hand-knotted carpets from the Middle East, China, Pakistan, Turkey, India and Afghanistan come under the hammer.

    Head down to Clarke Quay along Singapore River and you will be amazed at the interesting range of items up for sale at the weekly Sunday flea market! Take your time to shop at over 80 stalls selling a wide selection of unique products ranging from curios and collectibles to designer wear. The market is open every Sunday from 10am to 6pm. Also worth exploring, are the shops housed in the restored warehouses, selling a range of items such as second-hand goods, antiques, silk wear and accessories.

    For the best in dining, entertainment and shopping, head down to Stadium Waterfront @ Singapore Indoor Stadium.   • Great Singapore Sale
    The Great Singapore Sale, held in June, has become a much-looked-forward-to annual event on the calendar for both locals and visitors. This is when Singapore turns into one big shopping carnival with stores marking down prices drastically. Even designer goods may be discounted up to 80%. The Great Singapore Sale, happening 23 May to 6 July 2003, starts with a huge bang in a burst of activity on Orchard Road, followed by the best bargains from electronic goods and electrical appliances to fashion and food. Adding to the festive atmosphere are lucky draws with cash and gift prizes in celebration of the total shopping experience that Singapore offers in terms of price, variety, quality and ambience.
     

  • Local Souvenirs
    What would a trip to New Asia - Singapore be without taking home lasting impressions of the country? Souvenirs of Singapore can be found all over town in major department stores, shops and hotel shopping arcades and they range from T-shirts to local handicraft items. For a quick purchase, pick up any one of these spices which are also readily available in supermarkets and sundry shops. Spices of many Singaporean dishes come in pre-packed mixes.     Unique Cutlery

    A unique combination at Doc Cheng's (at Raffles Hotel) is a pair of chopsticks cleverly inserted into a bowl. You'll also find coconut utensil from perforated skimmers to big stir-fry spoons.


    Singapore Sling Products
    The famous Singapore Sling has been captured on coasters, T-shirts and posters at the Raffles Hotel Museum Shop. There are also lots of other Raffles Hotel souvenirs such as fridge magnets, key chains and reproduction of luggage stickers from the 1960s.

    Traditional Chinese Medicines
    Eastern health remedies have always been a source of interest and curiosity.Try concocting a brew with traditional Chinese herbs that are readily available in the exotic medical halls in Chinatown.

    What about something totally different - Chinese operatic items? As the main supplier of operatic items, Eng Tiang Huat (at River Valley Road) is the place to visit if you want a gift that is different.     At the Singapore Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre, The Botanic Garden Shop offers a good selection of natural history books and nature souvenirs/gifts.
