Somaemuldo Island
Address :
Maejuk-ri, Hansan-myeon,
Tongyeong-si , Gyeongsangnam-do
Description :
Somaemuldo
Island is the best attraction in Hallyeo Maritime National Park. A
1-2 hour ride on ship is required to Tongyeong Port, located at the
end of the Korean Peninsula. Oddly formed stones on cliffs on the
coast, the clear sea and Deungdaedo Island, which are often shown in
movies and commercials, are some of the more famous sights. When you
get off on the pier at Somaemuldo Island, walk past the 500-600 year
old camellia woods for 30 minutes on the mountain path, and you will
reach Mangtaebong Peak, the top of the island. The peak is a natural
observatory, where you can see many islands of Tongyeong and Geoje
Haeguemgang River including Deungdaedo Island. The view of
Deungdaedo Island from here is indescribably beautiful. Moreover,
Somaemuldo Island is welcomed as the best tourist site at the end of
the year because of magnificent view of the sunset and sunrise. The
highlight of Somaemuldo Island is Deungdaedo Island, also called ‘Haegeumdo’.
Somemuldo Island is a very small island. You can walk very slowly
for 20 minutes around the whole island. The white lighthouse on the
hill and green grass is a beautiful landscape. The lighthouse is the
only facility on this island, which was built by Japan during the
Japanese colonial period (1910-1945). And the 150-meter waterway
from Somaemuldo Island to Deungdaedo Island is where miracles
happen, similar Moses parting the sea. Two islands that are
underwater become a stony field twice a day when the tides ebb.
Siberian chrysanthemums cover Deungdaedo Island from the end of
October to early November.

Hansando Island
Address :
Hansan-myeon,
Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do
Description :
Hansando
Island, located in the middle of Hallyeo Haesang National Park, is a
historically important site. This is where General Lee Sun-Shin
(1545 - 1598) won his great victory using the "Turtle Boat" (an
ironclad warship shaped as a tortoise) by commanding the naval
forces of Chungcheong, Jeolla and Gyeongsang Provinces at the
beginning of Imjinwaeran, the Japanese invasion of Korea
(1592-1598). In Hansando Island, a 960 square km large forest is
spread with the camellias and old red pines. In the woods, there is
Jeseungdang, which was the strategy headquarters of General Lee
Sun-Shin commanding the war for five years during the time of
Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. Jeseungdang has a five-page
documentary called Chungmugong that recorded the activities of Lee
Sun-Shin which depicts the times of that period. You can also see
the barracts, The Suru Watch Tower, and Hansanjeong, where soldiers
were trained in archery. The Suru Watch Tower overlooks a fine view
of the sea, along with a view of Jeseungdang. The active cultivation
of oysters, ascidians, brown seaweed and pearls is attracting more
tourists to this area. The coast of Hansando has also become a
famous fishing spot.
