SHENZHEN
Bordering with Hong Kong to the south, Shenzhen, with an area of
327.5 square kilometers, was one of the earliest Special Economic
Zones in China. Major tourist spots include the Garden of Miniature
Chinese Landscapes, Xiangmi Lake Holiday Resort and Chinese Folk
Culture Village.
Chinese Folk Culture Village
Next to the Garden of Miniature Chinese Landscapes, the culture
village occupies an area of 180,000 square meters. More than 20
life-sized villages and scenic spots feature the unique life styles of
ethnic minorities in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan , Hunan, Tibet, Xinjiang
and Inner Mongolia . It is the largest of its kind in the world, with
the largest number of ethnic minorities, and the largest man-made
stone forest and waterfall. The villagers put on simple snd
unsophisticated ethnic song and dance performances for visitors, who
also have a wide variety of delicious snacks. |

Tongshi Hainan Ethnic
Museum |
|
To the
east of Tongshi , the museum covers an area of 5,000 square meters. It
has eight exhibition halls displaying historical relics, pictures,
daily utensils, and arts and crafts of Hainan's Li and Miao people.
The oldest relics date back to the New Stone Age. The rough stone
tools, animal hides, old spades with turned blades, handy bows and
arrows, beautiful skirts, scarves and fine jewelry present a vivid
picture of the history and present-day life of the Li and Miao. |

Ancient Style Li Village |
|
Fanmao
Li Village, two kilometers southwest of Tongshi, has boat-shaped
houses in the style of primitive times. They are built of bamboo and
wood, fastened with white and red rattan. The roof is in the shape of
a pyramid. The villagers are all good singers and dancers. Glutinous
rice stuffed in bamboo tubes baked in a fire and rice wine from the
village are especially delicious. |

Putian Mazu Temple |
|
The
temple of Mazu, or goddess of sea, on Meizhou lsland is the mecca for
Chinese sailors in the world and a great tourist attraction. The
original name of Mazu was Lin Mo (960-987). In her lifetime Lin Mo
saved many fishermen and merchant boats on the sea. She was respected
as the goddess of sea after her death. The temple attracts large
crowds of pilgrims on the 23rd day of the 3rd lunar month and the 9th
day of the 9th lunar month. |

Yongding Earthen Towers |
|
Yongding county of Fujian is famous for the unique earthen towers,
which serve as residential quarters. The towers are built on stone
foundations, the walls are composed of rammed earth and the roofs
covered with tiles. Most towers are round, while the rest are sqrare.
There are nearly 1,000 round towers in Yongding County alone.
Zhencheng Tower, built in 1912, covers an area of 500 square meters.
Its outer circle has four floors, with 48 rooms on each. The inner
circle has two floors, comprising a wheat barn ,an ancestral temple, a
theater, a school and a garden .As many as 100 families live in this
tower. For their unique style and structure, the earthen towers are
praised by Chinese and overseas experts as rare examples of ancient
Chinese architecture. |

Ningde She Villages |
|
Mindong County is home to
the She people. Half of the She people, or 158,-000, live in the eight
townships and 141 villages of the county. The She people are
hard-working, and are good at singing and dancing. They have retained
their traditional culture and lifestyle. Some of their festivals
coincide with those of the Han Chinese, such as the Dragon Boat
Festival, the Autumn Moon Festival and the Double Ninth Festival.
Singing in antiphonal style is a favorite with young men and women on
holidays. The wedding ceremony of the She is also a large occasion. |
