Ningbo

Ningbo, a famous foreign trade port, has a very long history. 7,000 years ago the people of Ningbo had made the glorious "Hemudu Culture" in this land and begun to develop towards the sea. Ningbo was a part of the Yue State during the Spring & Autumn Period, whereas a part of Huiji Shire during the Qin Dynasty and Han Dynasty 2,000 years ago, which consisted of four counties including Yin, Mao, Juzhang and Yuyao. The trading, shipbuilding and ocean shipping were rather flourishing at that time in Ningbo. In the early stage of the Ming Dynasty, Ningbo was granted as the Mingzhou Prefecture, but in 1381, the 14th year of Emperor Hongwu's reign, it was changed into Ningbo Prefecture, which is still in use today. Ning in Chinese means peace and Bo refer to the wave; thus, Ningbo actually implies when the ocean is calm, and the wave is gentle. During the Tang Dynasty, Ningbo was the center that manufactured the Tang ships and celadon china of the Yue Kiln and did business very frequently with foreign countries. It was granted altogether with Guangzhou, Yangzhou and Quanzhou the title the Four Largest Foreign Trade Ports of China, which composed the "Silk and China Road on the Sea" at that time. In 1840s, according to the "Five Ports Trade Treaty" which was signed with the western imperialist powers, Ningbo was forced to build a trading port, which was put into use in 1844.

Geography

Sanjiang Kou is the busiest section in downtown Ningbo, which is also called "Outside Beach of Ningbo". It refers to the riparian area in which the Yuyao River and the Fenghua River join together to form the Yongjiang River and then flow into the East Sea. Near the Sanjiang Kou, there are the Ling Bridge, Jiangsha Bridge, Yongjiang Bridge, Xinjiang Bridge, the Jiangsha Park, Shanshan Park, the Monument in memory of the visit of a Japanese Buddhist monk, Dao Yuan, in the Song Dynasty, etc. All kinds of the buildings and mansions stand in the Sanjiang Kou. Even the "First Street of Zhejiang Province", the Zhongshan Dong Road Shopping Street abounding in plazas, department stores and clothes monopoly shops, is located here. Being a place attracting so many merchants of different dynasties, Sanjiang Kou is worthy to be the landmark of Ningbo.

Climate

Belonging to the subtropical monsoon climate, being temperate and moist, Ningbo has four distinct seasons. The average temperature in the whole year is 16.2℃. Among the average temperatures of different months of a year, the highest is that of July, reaching up to 28.8℃, and the lowest is that of January, being -4.2℃. The frost-free period here covers 230-240 days and the growing period of the crops covers 300 days, which is fit for the growth of crops like grain, cotton, oil crops, etc. the annual average rainfall is 1300-1400mm, among which the rainfall of May to June holds up to 60%

Natural Ecological Environment

In the middle part of the coastline of China, close to the East Sea, Ningbo is naturally protected by the Zhoushan Archipelago in the east, lies on the verge of the Hangzhou Bay in the north, and connects with Shaoxing in the west and faces the Sanmen Bay in the south. Abounding in all kinds of natural scenic spots, the ecological environment of Ningbo is very beautiful, for the vegetation on the plain, the hill and the mountain is perfectly protected. The covering ratio of trees of the whole city is 47.5% and that of the urban area reaches 30%. There are two state forest parks-the Tiantong Park and the Xikou Park, and a provincial forest park-the Nanxi Park in Ningbo. The Tengtou Village of Fenghua has even been awarded the title "Top 500 Regions with Good Ecological Environment in the World".

Economy

Ningbo is always cared most by central government and the provincial government of Zhejiang in carrying out the opening-up policy and the economic construction. For example, Ningbo was included in the "14 nationwide port cities firstly sharing the further opening polity" in 1984, and it was also included in the "Cities with Special Plans" and "sub-provincial cities" respectively in 1987 and in 1994. As one of the major constructing regions invested by the state, a great amount of traffic, energy and raw material projects have been established in Ningbo. As regards the industry, a system focusing mainly on the petroleum industry, the fine chemical industry and the electric power industry has been formed supported with the electronics, metallurgy, building material, textile, food, medicine and handicraft, etc. As regards the agriculture, a comprehensive developing pattern combining the crop production, the diversified economy and the township enterprises has prospered. 　　The tourist industry has also become the new economic growing point of the city. At present, Ningbo is one of the "Top Tourist Cities of China". The future target of Ningbo government is to build Ningbo into a widely opened and modernized international port city with strong economic strength, developed scientific and cultural level, prosperous life of people, good social order and custom, and beautiful urban and suburban environment.

Culture

Known as "Town of Cultural Relics", Ningbo is a famous historical and cultural city of China. Totally there are 231 cultural relic protection units of different grades in Ningbo, among which 7 are under the protection of the state and 29 are under the protection of the province. There are 10 professional arts troupes, 9 theaters, 270 film projection units and 155 profitable performing sites. The typical local operas in Ningbo include the Yong Opera, the Yao Opera, etc. The Xiao Baihua Yue Opera Troupe of Ningbo has gained a great deal of praises from the audience both at home and abroad in recent years. Meanwhile, the cultural facilities are gradually implemented in the city. Bath the Cixi County and the Haishu County are awarded the title "the Advanced Cultural Counties in China". At present, there are altogether 982 entertainment places and 1,077 videotape rent houses in Ningbo with 100,000 employees. A comprehensive system of cultural market, related widely with entertainment, audiovisual products, books, recreation, cultural relics and arts, has been thus formed.

A Survey of Tourist Industry

Under the reform and opening up policy, the tourist industry of Ningbo has now taken initial shape after experiencing the embryonic stage. It has played a positive role in promoting the reforming and opening up of Ningbo, in accelerating the construction of the modernized international port city and in enriching the life of the people. During the year of 1998, Ningbo has received totally 100,000 foreign visitors and 10,050,000 home visitors. With the enhancement of the economic power and the adjustment of the economic structure, the promoting effects and the potential of the tourist industry of Ningbo have emerged. Personages of various circles have all realized that it is very important to stress on tourist industry and to regard it as the new economic growing point and the pillar industry of Ningbo.
In recent years, the number of tourists to Ningbo keeps on rising, and as a result the tourist industry income increases gradually. Meanwhile, the development and construction of the tourist resources and the scenic spots are strengthened, and new tourist products are developed as soon as possible. Moreover, the comprehensive reception ability has been improved rapidly. Now Ningbo has totally 54 foreign-related tourist hotels, 5 international travel agencies and 42 domestic travel agencies. The employees in the tourist industry in the whole city have reached more than 17,000. Ningbo Airport, Long-distance Bus Stations, the South Railway station and the Passenger Transportation Port have formed a stereoscopic transportation network.

City Flower and City Tree of Ningbo

On September 14th, 1984, the elegant and stately camellia was selected as the City Flower of Ningbo and the evergreen camphor tree was selected as the City Tree in the 8th Conference of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Ningbo. Both the camellia and the camphor tree are local plants well representing the historical culture and natural appearance of Ningbo. In addition, the bright and colorful camellia and camphor tree are easy to plant and control and immune to many diseases. Tourist Symbol of Ningbo

"Sun Held by Two Birds" is a piece of unearthed artifacts found in the Hemudu Relic, which can be traced back to 7,000 years ago. Figuring like a comb, the design of "Sun Held by Two Birds" is composed of five concentric circles, forming the sun in the center covered with flame on the upper outer circle which symbolizes the light of the sun, and a couple of phoenix around the sun dancing. It's the first man-made sacred sun statue with complete figure found in the archaeological work up till now. Since the whole figure is ingeniously and boldly designed, the lines are skilled and smooth, it can be called the fine work as compared with other art articles found in the Hemudu Relic. Signifying the original worship to the totem, it actually represents the respect of the people of Hemudu to the sun and the universe. Therefore, Hemudu in the ancient time was regarded as the "Hometown of the Sun God"; "Sun Held by Two Birds" hence stands for the long history and the unique tourist resources of Ningbo.

City Symbol of Ningbo

"Benteng" (Surging Forward), a sculpture made of stainless steel, 8 meters high, stands in the Center of Zhongshan Culture Square of Ningbo. The style of the lucid and freely revolving modern shaping reminds the visitors of the successive progress that the people of Ningbo have made from the ancient time to present. On the inside circle of the base of the sculpture, nine pictures, showing respectively the scenery of Hemudu Relic, the Tianyi Pavilion, the Beilun Harbor, the Tianfeng Pagoda, the Ling Bridge, the Drum-tower, the Zhaobao Mountain, and the Xiaogang Developing Region, are placed to set off the theme of the sculpture. The outside circle of the base is composed of 21 groups of fountains symbolizing that Ningbo is running toward the 21st century.

Local Culture

Opera and Folk Arts
Having a long history of above 200 years, Yong Opera, formerly called "Chuanke", is a kind of folk tune sung in the dialect of the farmers of Ningbo.
The professional Chuanke troupe appeared in the middle of the Qing Dynasty. From then on, the performance form of Chuanke gradually changed from the solo sing to the opera accompanied with musical instruments. The main programs of Chuanke in the early stage is "Selling Haystack", "Recognizing Mother in the Hall" and "Playing Lanterns" etc. in the 16th year of Qing Emperor Guangxu's reign, the Yong Opera spread from the rural area to downtown Ningbo and even to Shanghai. The name of Chuanke was then changed into "Ningbo Tanhua", "Siming Wen Opera", "Improved Yong Opera" and ultimately into "Yong Opera" in the 1950s. Yong Opera, performed in strong local official dialect, absorbing tunes of popular local folk songs, figuring the characters of the ordinary folk, is deeply welcomed by local people. The outstanding Yong Opera programs include "Two Brothers", "Wonderful Experiences of a Prodigal" and "Scissors in Half" etc.

Folk Custom
Having a long history of nearly 400 years, Dragon Dance is popular in Fenghua of Ningbo. The dragon used in Fenghua Dragon Dance is mainly cloth dragon accompanied with black dragon, grass dragon, embroidery dragon and white dragon, the color of which may be black, yellow or black-yellow. It's said that black dragon brings the water to the water vat, and the yellow dragon brings grain to the granary; therefore, folks express their hope for a good harvest and a peaceful life through the Dragon Dance. The varied and interesting action of the Dragon Dance includes: revolving, strolling, rolling, jumping and playing etc. the player holding the head of the dragon is the chief of the team. Other players, standing face to face with the chief, skillfully swing the body of the dragon accompanied with Fenghua Gong and Drum to produce a happy and warm atmosphere. In the past, most of the players holding the dragon were farmers who usually played the dragon lantern in rural area. Since the foundation of the Peoples Republic of China, the Dragon Dance, as a kind of interesting folk dance, has been further developed. Fenghua of Ningbo is thus called the Hometown of the Dragon Dance.

Dragon Boat Racing
The Dragon Boat Racing, held in the Dongqian Lake area, shares the same style with that of other cities in China. In the racing, each team represents a village on a dragon-boat on which one person is in charge of beating the drum to encourage the players on the boat. The dragon-boat rushes to the target like the freed arrow accompanied with the splashed water and thunderous drum. How exciting the scenery is!

Festivals and Celebrations
Ningbo International Costume Festival
The costume industry of Ningbo, having a very long history, is the birthplace of the costume industry of China in modern history. The tailors of Fenghua of Ningbo, making the first Chinese Sun Yat-sen's uniform as well as the first western-style business suit in China, are thus called "the Tailors of Hong Bang". At present, the costume production of Ningbo holds nearly 12% that of the whole country covering a great deal of famous costume such as: 　Shanshan, Yager, Luomeng, Yixiu, Peaceful Bird, Peiluocheng and Bangbang etc which enjoy great prestige both at home and abroad.

In order to introduce and present thoroughly the long history and the strong cultural inside details of the costume industry of Ningbo, one-week Ningbo International Costume Festival is held annually in October in Ningbo since 1997. The Festival consists of a series of activities such as: Large-scale Theatrical Evening for the Opening Ceremony of the Festival, International Costume Fair, State Costume Design Competition, International Costume Academic Forum Exhibition of Famous Costume, Trade Activities, Travel and Gourmet Tour and so on. Through the festival, which accelerates the opening and developing steps of the economy of Ningbo especially that of the costume industry, Ningbo, an international tourist harbor, shows the world a highly opened figure as well as a prosperous future.

Reopening Fishing Festival of China
Shipu Harbor, a famous fishing harbor in China, belongs to Xiangshan County featuring the strong fishing industry. The fishermen here share a lot of unique customs such as: "Step on the Beach on March 3rd" and "Worshiping the Sea" etc, among which "Worshiping the Sea" is a kind of ceremony praying peace and harvest held by fishermen before going fishing on the sea. A few years ago, it was regulated by the state that during the period from July 15th to September 15th, fishing is forbidden in the East Sea area each year, which is called the "Stopping Fishing Period". When the "Stopping Fishing Period" ends, all kinds of local customs related with fishing are organized by the government to form the "Reopening Fishing Festival" Ceremony. During the period of the festival, all kinds of activities including the local theatrical performances, exhibitions, trade negotiations, islands and bays tour, stepping on the beach and sports competitions on the beach etc. will be held. Aiming at strengthening the idea of developing and protecting the resources of the sea, the Reopening Fishing Festival of China, focusing on fishing light and fishing boats, has exerted a considerable influence both at home and abroad through the scenery of the sea as well as the customs of the fishing area.

Liangzhu Marriage Custom Festival of China
The love story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, widely read with admiration in china, is one of the four major folk-tales in China. The leading characters-Liang Shangbo and Zhu Yingtai, also called as the "Oriental Romeo and Juliet" by the western people, have been regarded as the model for loyal and steadfast love. The Liang Shanbo Temple and the Liangzhu Tomb buried both Liang Shangzhu and Zhu Yingtai are built in Gaoqiao Liangzhu Cultural Park of Yinxian County in Ningbo, the birthplace of the love story of Liangzhu. There is an old saying in local place that if a couple want to love each other and rely on each other forever; they shall worship the Liang Shanbo Temple. Aiming at enhancing and spreading the love, living and value view proposed by the Liangzhu custom, presenting the new culture of marriage customs and corresponding with Ningbo International Costume Festival, China Liangzhu Marriage Custom Festival is held annually by the People's Government of Yinxian County of Ningbo and the Tourist Bureau of Ningbo in the Liangzhu Cultural Park during the period from September 29th to October 3rd. The festival focuses on directly promoting the fame of Ningbo and enhancing the development of the tourist industry of Ningbo.

Liangzhu Marriage Custom Festival consists of activities below: (1) Opening Ceremony, namely, the Century Marriage Ceremony, which will invite 999 couples of all nations in China to join the classic and romantic century wedding ceremony; (2) "Love of the Butterfly" Large-scale Garden Party; (3) "Miss Butterfly" Competition and "Top Ten Couples" Competition of Ningbo; (4) Closure Ceremony, i.e. Large Theatrical Evening named "Best Wish to Tomorrow".

    Tour buses from other places are allowed to enter or leave the urban area of Ningbo at any time, whereas the freight wagons of other cities are allowed to pass through the urban area of Ningbo only from 20:00pm to 7:00am.

    Ningbo Railway Station, a first-grade passenger train station, under the Railway Branch of Hangzhou, now has 4 platforms, 9 couples of trains traveling to Shanghai, Baotou, Beijing, Jilin and Guangzhou respectively transporting nearly 2,600,000 passengers annually.     Ningbo now has 60 public traffic lines including 40 lines in the urban area, 20 lines in the suburban area covering a distance of 777.17 km along which 1,964 stops are set. Totally there are 716 buses running in the city carrying 43,000 people each day.
     

  • Bus Stops of Ningbo
    There is a tourist bus-line in the urban area of Ningbo on which 6 buses run each day stopping at the scenic spots of the city such as South Station, Tianyi Pavilion, Fan's House, Dongmen Kou, Tianfeng Pegoda and the Town God's Temple Trading Tower etc. At the south station of the minibus in Ningbo, every 5 minutes a minibus travels to the State Scenic Spot of Xikou; at the Qiche Dong Road, a minibus runs to Ayu King Temple and Tiantong Temple every 10 minutes; at the Southeast Station Square; a two-storied bus runs toward the Dongqian Lake Scenic Site every 30 minutes; at the East Station, a minibus runs toward the Dongqian Lake Scenic Site every 10 minutes; at the South Station or the Wharf, a bus or a minibus runs toward Zhaobao Mountain (Zhenghaikou Coastal Defense Relic). Bus lines from the urban area of Ningbo to the Liangzhu Cultural Park and Baoguo Temple have also been opened. The Hemudu Relic is one stop on the line from Ningbo to Yuyao.
     

  • Expressways
    The Hang (Hangzhou)-Yong (Ningbo) Expressway, covering a distance of 145km, opened in December 1996. Being the first expressway in Zhejiang Province, Hang-Yong Expressway reduces greatly the time used for traveling from Ningbo to Hangzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, Suzhou and Wuxi etc. Now, the Hang-Yong Expressway has been extended to Beilun. The Ningbo section of the "Tongsan Xian" Expressway is now under construction.

Yongjiang River Pearl Revolving Restaurant
Yongjiang River Pearl Revolving Restaurant, adjacent to Sanjiang Kou, sited in the busiest Zhongshan Dong Road, is the highest building in Zhejiang now. Viewing from the top of the restaurant, 138 meters above the land, you can enjoy the whole sight of Ningbo. Ningbo Dongyishun Service Co. Ltd
Ningbo Dongyishun Service Co. Ltd., founded in October 1995, is the only Moslem restaurant in Ningbo. The restaurant serves mainly the western or Chinese fast food, the stew or mutton used for the dishes are cooked strictly under the Moslem's method. Smoking is forbidden inside the restaurant.

Up till now, the restaurant has received altogether 12,200 Muslims of Arab countries and other countries who came to Ningbo either for investment, tour or study and a lot of domestic Muslims. Due to the low price of the cuisine, warm and thoughtful service and elegant dining environment, it is awarded by the government of Ningbo and the municipal tourist bureau as the "Civilized Sample Window in the Tourist Industry" and appointed as a foreign-related tourist unit.
