Harbin

With a long history, Harbin was the birthplace of Jin and Qing Dynasties. Over 40 nationalities (including Han Nationality) live in the area of Harbin. In the early 20th century, Harbin was an international commercial and trade city, boasting consulates of 16 countries, over 30 foreign companies and more than 60,000 foreigners from 18 countries. In recent years, Harbin has become the largest open city near the border in northeast China.

Transportation

The City's Accessibility
Harbin has 7,377.9 kilometers' roads of different classes. The road coverage is 13.87 kilometers per hundred square kilometers. A road network has formed: 6 state roads which are 838.9 kilometers; 8 provincial roads of 842 kilometers; 41 county-level roads of 1,782 kilometers; 164 town roads of 2,614.6 kilometers. And the roads for special use are 1,300 kilometers long.

Taiping International airport
Taiping International Airport is an important international aviation port in northeast Asia. It can handle 6.66 million passengers each year, 3,000 people at rush hours and 180 planes every day. The parking apron is 330,000 square meters, which can meet the requirement of the parking and maintenance of 18 large airplanes. The terminal is 67,000 square meters. At present, there are only 7 gates and soon there will be 16. The tower of aviation control is 4,600 square meters with advanced facilities. The parking lot is more than 40,000 square meters and can accommodate 1,400 vehicles. For the time being, 23 airlines are operating at the airport. Each week, there are over 200 flights. Altogether, there are more than 50 air routes involving more than 40 cities. The international flights can reach over 10 cities in Russia, Japan and Korea.

Harbin Railway Station
First built in 1899, Harbin Railway Station is one of the largest railway stations in China conducting the business of passenger transportation, goods transportation and providing services of food, accommodation, travel and recreation. Located at central Harbin, it is an important transportation hub in northeast China and a window of Heilongjiang Province and Harbin city. Connecting many cities by Hachang, Habin, Hazhou, Hasui and Labin railways, it can handle 132 pairs of passenger trains each day, including 14 pairs of tourist coaches, 1 pair international trains per week and over 80,000 passengers each day. There are 3 main waiting-halls and 4 waiting-halls for tourist trains as well as 3 assistant waiting-halls. Expressway
The 132.8-kilometer-long expressway from Harbin to Daqing is the first expressway in the province. The road base is 24.5 meters wide. The vehicle way is 15 meters wide with a designed speed of 100 kilometers an hour. Hasui expressway from Harbin to Suifenhe, is a part of G301 Suiman expressway. The road base is 24.5 meters wide. The vehicle way is 17 meters wide with a designed speed of 100 kilometers an hour. Jiaha expressway is a part of G221 state expressway. Passing Bin County, Fangzheng and Yilan, the road is 324.59 kilometers long. Its road base is 12 and 13 meters wide. The vehicle way is 9 and 13 meters wide with a designed speed of 80 and 100 kilometers an hour respectively.

Water Transportation and Water Tourism
The water system of Heilongjiang River involves China, Russia and Mongolia. The condition for the development of water transportation and tourism is favorable. Many important cities in the province such as Harbin, Jiamusi, Qiqihar, and Harbin are located along the river's main and tributary streams. Harbin is connected with these cities and the Far East industrial cities in Russia by Songhua River, Heilongjiang River, and Wusuli River. To meet the needs of passenger transportation, the ports of Harbin, Jiamusi and Heihe have increased in facilities. They also purchased 14 modern boats including hovercrafts for the passengers and tourists' use.

Even in the ice-flowing period in winter, the water transportation is still going on. In those 16 open ports of water transportation, both the international and domestic passenger transportation started. At present, there are 10 routes of international and domestic passenger transportation. The water tourism on Songhua River develops quickly. The water transportation will help the tourist resources such as natural scenery on both sides of Heilongjiang River and the unique ethnic customs gain greater

Urban Traffic
Harbin has built a relatively complete public transportation system for the time being. There are 93 routes of public transportation in the city proper with 2, 382 vehicles, including 46 bus routes with 1,237 buses; 12 routes of trolley bus with 378 vehicles; 35 joint transportation routes with 767 vehicles. To meet the needs of the residents and tourists, Harbin adds new routes of tourist buses from Memorial Tower of Combating Against the Floods to the Sun Island. In addition, there are 3 ship routes and 34 ships linking the city with the Sun Island, which are fast and convenient.

Taxi Services
In the past 20 years the sector of taxi has taken on a new look. Harbin had only 1 taxi company in the late 1970s but now it has over 140. In 1979, the city only got 120 taxis but now it has 8,023 taxis. Besides the old types such as Lada, Naizi and Fiat, Harbin now has some new brands such as Santata, Jetta and Fukang as well as Xiali. The rate of the better brand is 1.90 yuan per kilometer while 1.60 yuan for the ordinary brands.

Road Transportation
The long-distance road transportation in Harbin is centered at Harbin and radiant to the whole province and other areas. There are 643 routes for road transportation. The main routes leading out of the province are from Harbin to Beijing, Shandong, Laizhou, Shenyang, Dalian, Dandong, Liaoyang, Changchun, Jilin and Inner Mongolia. The routes in the province are from Harbin to Qiqihaer, Mudanjiang, Jiamusi, Daqing, Yichun, Suihua, Heihe, Suifenhe, Jixi, Hegang and Tongjiang. The luxury buses are operating and providing fine services on these routes. The tourist routes are from Harbin to Jingpohu, Wudalianchi, Yichun Primitive Forest Park, E County Jindu Ancient City, Yabuli Skiing Area, Yuquan Hunting Ground, Erlong Hill, Longfeng Hill Reservoir and the former residence of Xiaohong.

Tourist Automobiles
These are three tourist automobile companies in Harbin, namely, Guest Motorcade under Provincial Government, Provincial Tourist Automobile Company and Harbin Tourist Automobile Company. Guest Motorcade under Provincial Government has 151 employees and 138 vehicles, including 20 cars, 1 jeep, 4 vans, 11 buses, 2 mini-vans and 59 taxis. Provincial Tourist Automobile Company is an enterprise under Heilongjiang Tourism Administration. It has 12 large buses, 11 medium-sized buses, 5 vans and 32 cars. The enterprise has 150 people on the staff with a capital of 23 million yuan and an area of 10,000 square meters. The business of Provincial Tourist Automobile Company is promising. As an enterprise under Harbin Tourism Administration, Harbin Tourist Automobile Company has a fixed asset of 4.7 million yuan and a capital of 3.3 million yuan. With 40 people on the staff and 28 vehicles, namely 3 large buses, 21 medium-sized buses, 1 van and 3 cars, it can provide the tourists with satisfactory services.

• Sino-Foreign Free Market
  The Sino-Foreign Free Market was set up on 6 June 1992 on the purpose of deepening reforming and opening up policy, developing economy of border area and friendship between countries. The free market is located in the middle of Garden Street to Hegou Street, Nan Gand District Harbin City. It consists of 5 streets in the shape of Chinese character "Jing".
